Our Program at New York Methodist Hospital

The Cardiac Surgery Program at New York Methodist Hospital was approved by the State of New York in 2003 to provide cardiothoracic surgical care to the Borough of Brooklyn. Under the auspices of the NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery in Manhattan, the first case was performed on April 13, 2004. Our surgeons and cardiac anesthesiologists are full-time faculty members in the Weill Cornell Department and remain active at the Manhattan campus. The faculty and staff, including intensivists, perfusionists, nurses, physician assistants, ancillary services and office staff, are committed to providing Brooklyn with the same outstanding level of care that patients have come to expect from NewYork-Presbyterian.

To date, over 340 cardiac surgical procedures have been performed at New York Methodist Hospital. With the addition of more cardiologists, catheterization labs, additional pulmonary faculty, and an ever increasing outside referral base, we expect the volume of thoracic and cardiac surgery to continue to grow. We provide a complete spectrum of cardiac and thoracic surgical procedures in the adult:
  • For the cardiac patient, we offer on and off pump CABG, complex mitral and tricuspid valve repair, valve replacement, repair of thoracic and thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms, repair of aortic dissections, adult congenital heart surgery (ASD, VSD, anomalous pulmonary veins), re-operative cardiac surgery, and surgical treatment of atrial fibrillation.
  • For patients in need of non-cardiac thoracic surgical procedures, we provide pulmonary resections for benign and malignant lesions (wedge, lobectomy), Video Assisted Thoracic Surgical procedures for pleural effusions, pneumothorax, biopsies and wedge resections.
